Bypoll results: SP routed in UP, AAP loses Sangrur in Punjab

The three Lok Sabha seats where byelections were held are Rampur and Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Sangrur in Punjab.

The bypolls to the two Lok Sabha constituencies in UP were necessitated as the Azamgarh seat was vacated following the Akhilesh Yadav's election to the state assembly, and the Rampur seat was similarly vacated by the party's tallest Muslim leader Azam Khan.

In Rampur, BJP candidate Ghanshyam Singh Lodhi, who recently joined the party, won the election by toppling SP's Asim Raja by 40,000 votes.

In Azamgarh, a triangular contest is underway between BJP's Dinesh Lal Yadav 'Nirahua', a Bhojpuri actor-singer, the SP's Dharmendra Yadav and the BSP's Shah Alam, also known as Guddu Jamali.

According to reports, Dinesh Lal Yadav is ahead with 11,000 votes while SP is trailing.

In Punjab, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's stronghold Sangrur, Simranjit Singh Mann of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) won with a margin of over 7,000 votes.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Durgesh Pathak has won Delhi's Rajinder Nagar bypoll by over 11,000 votes.

Bypolls were also held in Tripura's Agartala, Jubarajnagar, Surma and Town Bardowali.

Chief Minister Manik Saha, who needed to get elected to Tripura assembly to retain his post, won the Town Bardowali seat.

The ruling YSR Congress's candidate Mekapati Vikram Reddy won the bypoll election to Andhra Pradesh's Atmakur.
