93 farmers commit suicide in Marathawada this year

| | Mar 03, 2015, at 04:39 pm
Mumbai, Mar 3(IBNS) As many as 93 debt-trapped farmers have reportedly committed suicide in Maharashtra's Marathwada region over the last two months because of a major agricultural crisis.

Reports said successive droughts, hailstorm in 2014 and faulty agriculture policy have taken a heavy toll. on the farmers, forcing many of them to suicide since January 1, 2015.

Reports said despite Marathwada being an arid region a large number of farmers opted for water intensive orchards and perennial crops as traditional crops were not enough for earning their livelihood.

The farmers went for huge debts as the farming was capital intensive, but they had to wait for long for the yield.
