Publisher Foisal Arefin Dipon murder case: 8 militants awarded death sentence

Dhaka: Eight activists of banned militant outfit Ansar al-Islam have been awarded death sentences in connection with the case related to 2015 murder of Jagriti Prokashony Publisher Foisal Arefin Dipon.

The convicts have also been fined Tk50,000 each.

Judge Md Majibur Rahman of the Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal in Dhaka gave the verdict around midday on Wednesday, reports Dhaka Tribune.

If the criminals involved in this heinous act survive, other members of Ansar al-Islam will be motivated to commit such crimes. Since the accused were connected to Dipon’s murder in an organized way as members of the Ansar al-Islam, they must be given the same punishment, said the verdict copy as quoted by the newspaper.

Dipon was hacked to death at his Aziz Super Market office in 2015.

Among the eight, Abdus Sabur alias Abdus Samad alias Sujon; top Ansar al-Islam operatives Khairul Islam alias Jamil alias Jisan; Sheikh Abdullah alias Jubayer alias Jayed; Abu Siddique Sohel alias Sajid alias Sihab; and Mozammel Hossain alias Saimon are now in jail, reports Dhaka Tribune.

Sacked army major Syed Ziaul Haque Zia, and Akram Hossain alias Hasib, who are the other accused in the case, are currently on the run.
