Pakistani celebrities take part in ‘tuk tuk' march to highlight issues of people with disabilities
A host of Pakistani celebrities, including actress Mahira Khan, former cricket team captain Wasim Akram, actor-producer Humayun Saeed, and actor-model Feroze Khan, participated in the ‘Tuk Tuk March’ to highlight the issues of people with disabilities and to encourage them to pursue their rights to work and mobility.
The march in which the celebrities took a rickshaw called ‘tuk tuk’ was organised by Network of Organizations Working for Persons with Disabilities (NOWPDP), a Karachi-based NGO that works towards raising awareness, striving for the rights of, and making a significant difference to the quality of life and welfare of people with disabilities. The march was at People’s Square in Karachi, Pakistan.
Fashion designer, TV show host, director, and actor who is often referred to by just his initials - HSY (Hassan Sheheryar Yasin) hosted the march as NOWPDP's goodwill ambassador to celebrate the right to livelihood and transport of people with disabilities, according to Dawn newspaper.
As part of the initiative, a group of people with disabilities were given customised rickshaws that they can drive to make money.
The event kickstarted with an introduction by Omair Ahmad, the executive director of NOWPDP, followed by a talk show-style panel discussion by HSY.
Other celebrities who were part of the march were actress Sanam Saeed, who is known globally by her serial Zindagi Gulzar Hai, actress Maya Ali, Yutubber, and Pakistan’s most popular and highest-paid actress Ayesha Omer, and actor and visual effects director Bilal Ashraf.
The celebrities were given their rickshaw-themed coloured bandanas as tokens of appreciation, following which they were invited to pledge to a NOWPDP project of choice.
This was followed by the tuk tuk or rickshaw drive around the People’s Square, a famous recreational area and public park.
