Miracle in Nepal: Two workers rescued alive after 10 days trapped inside tunnel

At least two people have been miraculously rescued from under the debris and mud of the hydropower tunnel, ten days after the deadly flash flood  hit Nepal, leaving the section of the Himalayan country paralysed.

The two rescued individuals were identified as Sanjay Sah and Kabir Maharjan.

They were reportedly rescued from the tunnel on Thursday by a team of Nepal Army, with personnel from the Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and technical experts.

Nepal Army spokesperson Rajaram Basnet confirmed both workers were found alive inside the project tunnel, reported The Himalayan Times.

According to Dipa Dahal, press and research expert to the Prime Minister, Sah is in stable condition, while Maharjan is in serious condition, the newspaper reported.

Meanwhile, Nepal Army personnel shared a video of their rescue on X.

Sharing the video, the Army said: "After 10 Days of Intense Struggle—Rebirth of Two Lives, a Miraculous Victory of Hope #Trishuli3A Two People Rescued Alive from the Tunnel."

Nepal continues search for missing people

The situation remains considerably severe in Nepal as rescuers continue their operation, more than a week since the flood hit the country.

The August 26 collapse sent a huge mass of ice, rock and mud into the region’s river systems, triggering devastating floods that swept through settlements, destroyed homes and damaged roads, bridges and hydropower infrastructure.

The disaster struck communities in Nepal’s Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts before floodwaters and debris moved further downstream.

Over 1000 people died and scores of others went missing in the tragedy, marking one of the deadliest natural calamities reported in the country in recent times.

Meanwhile, to facilitate the ongoing identification process, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Government of India, has decided to make available the services of Central Forensic Science Laboratories (CFSLs), State Forensic Science Laboratories (SFSLs) and National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) laboratories in India for DNA profiling of first-degree biological relatives of persons who remain missing following the flash flood in Nepal.
