200-year-old Hindu temple in Pakistan faces demolition. Here's what happened next
Pakistani authorities have halted the demolition of the 200-year-old Ram Leela temple in Dera Ismail Khan following the intervention of Dera Civil Society president Sohail Ahmed Aazmi.
The Hindu temple is among 400 properties in the region included in the cultural heritage list maintained by the Department of Archaeology and Museums.
Located in the heart of Rahim Bazaar, the historic structure was reportedly at risk of being demolished to make way for a commercial building.
Speaking to Dawn News, Aazmi, who also serves as the president of the traders’ association, said an attempt had been made several years ago to construct a commercial plaza at the site. However, the plan was halted following intervention by local residents, including traders.
He said consultations with the relevant authorities were underway to prevent further damage to the historic structure and determine measures for its protection.

Aazmi said he was informed in the morning that some people were attempting to demolish the temple to make way for a commercial building on the site.
He subsequently reached the location with other citizens and intervened to stop the workers from carrying out the demolition, he told the newspaper.
Aazmi also claimed that the building had been sold by the Evacuee Trust Property Board for Rs 25 million during the tenure of former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister Ali Amin Gandapur.
