Five people detained in Dhaka for 'militant link'

Dhaka, July 27 (IBNS): Bangladesh security forces have detained five people from a house in Mirpur area of capital Dhaka city for their alleged involvement with the banned militant outfit Ansar Al Islam, media reports said on Saturday.

A suspected militant and three policemen were injured during the drive, Md Mahiduzzaman, superintendent of Police (Media) of Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) told The Daily Star.

Among the detainees, Ahmad Ali is an assistant general manager (AGM) at Sonali Bank, reported the newspaper.

Ahmad is a top-ranking member of the banned militant outfit, the SP told the newspaper.

According to The Daily Star report, as soon as police tried to enter the flat the suspected militants attacked them with sharp weapons and cross-bows.

They also set off explosives, the SP told the newspaper.

Police fired several rounds in retaliation.
