Doctor dies in Karachi after not getting ventilator facility for COVID-19 treatment
Islamabad/IBNS: A doctor in Pakistan, who had tested positive for COVID-19, died in Karachi city of the country after he could not get a ventilator for his treatment, media reports said.
Dr Furqanul Haq — who had recently retired from the Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases — is the third doctor in Karachi to have fallen victim to the disease, reported Dawn News.
Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) Secretary General Dr Qaiser Sajjad was quoted as saying by Dawn News that the deceased needed to be put on a ventilator but could not find the facility despite visiting several hospitals.
"If a doctor in the country's biggest city cannot be given a ventilator then what will happen to common citizens?" Dr Sajjad questioned.
Doctors across the country have complained that the medical community was not being provided with personal protective equipment, making them vulnerable to the virus, reported the Pakistani newspaper.
The doctors in the nation also urged the PM Imran Khan-led government to impose a strict lockdown, saying that if not controlled, the healthcare system will not even have enough beds to accommodate all patients.
Meanwhile, 20,725 COVID-19 positive cases have been reported from Pakistan so far.
The country has recorded 471 deaths.
