Bangladesh madrasa girl case: Prime suspect arrested

Dhaka, Apr 10 (IBNS): One of the key suspects in the attempted murder of of the critically burnt madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi in Bangladesh has been arrested, media reports said.

The arrested person was identified as Umme Sultana Popi.

According to local media reports, the arrested person is the niece of Principal Siraj-ud-Daula.

Popi was arrested at her home in Chanchandiya in Sonagazi’s Pour,  Sonagazi Model Police Inspector Kamal Hossain, the case’s investigating officer, told bdnews24 news portal.

Another suspect named in the case dossier, Zubayer Ahmed, was also arrested on Tuesday night, he told the news portal.

A total 10 suspects, including three named in the case dossier, have been arrested by the police in connection with the case so far.

As per bdnews24 report, Nusrat’s family initiated a case of sexual abuse against the madrasa’s Principal Siraj-ud-Daula in March. 

The girl's relatives alleged that the principal had tried to burn her to death with the help of his followers when the victim refused to withdraw the sexual abuse case against him.

Nusrat is currently undergoing treatment in a Dhaka hospital.

Her condition is said to be critical, media reports said.
