Bangladesh: Hindu businesses, houses attacked by mob in Sunamganj over alleged Facebook post

| @indiablooms | Dec 04, 2024, at 11:53 pm

A mob vandalised Hindu businesses and houses in Bangladesh's Sunamganj amid allegation that a community member hurt Muslim sentiments by posting a derogatory image on Facebook, media reports said.

The latest vandalisation occurred at a time when Hindus are protesting against the arrest of priest Chinmoy Krishna Das in the country.

The detained Hindu person was identified as 21-year-old Akash Das.

He belonged to Manglargaon village.

Zahidul Haque, officer-in-charge of Dowarabazar Police Station, told The Daily Star that the unrest began after a local man shared a Facebook post around 7:40pm, alleging that Akash had uploaded a "religiously offensive" photo in a comment.

"The post sparked outrage among locals, leading to protests," the OC said.

"We took Akash in custody for his safety, but the mob attacked our team attempting to snatch him. Later, they vandalised several houses, including Akash's, in Manglargaon village and several shops owned by Hindu people in the upazila town," he said.

Army later reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
