Kabul: At least nine people died and 41 others, including children, were hurt as a blast occurred in the Wazir Akbar Khan area of Kabul city on Friday, media reports said on Saturday.

The blast hit the region close to the Wazir Akbar Khan mosque.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Interior (MoI), Abdul Nafay Takor told Tolo News that the blast was due to a car bombing.

The blast triggered international condemnation.

Former President Hamid Karzai 'strongly' condemned the incident.

The US Embassy in Kabul tweeted: " The U.S. strongly condemns today’s vicious attack on worshipers outside the Wazir Akber Khan mosque in Kabul. Such an attack against people professing their faith is unjustifiable. We offer condolences to the families of the victims and hope those injured recover swiftly."

The UN Assistant Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said: "Another bitter reminder of ongoing insecurity and terrorist activity in Afghanistan - today's explosion outside a downtown mosque in Kabul caused numerous casualties, including fatalities. Our thoughts are with the families of those killed, wishing speedy recovery to the injured."
