US Open: Double delight for Bopanna, Sania-Martina-Leander advance to next round
New York, Sept 6 (IBNS) Rohan Bopanna won both his matches in the Men's Doubles and Mixed Doubles category to advance to the next round, other Indian players, Sania Mirza and Leander Peas too advanced in the Women's Doubles and Mixed Doubles respectively with their common partner Martina Hingis, here on Saturday.
Leander and Martina were given a walkover by Canadian-Australian pair of Eugene Bouchard and Nick Kyrgios as the veteran players rolled on to the next round.
Bopanna and his Mixed Doubles partner Y Chan of Taipei took on the Russian-Austrian pair of A Kudryavtseva and A Peya and defeated them 3-6, 6-3, (8)-(10).
In his Men’s Doubles match, Bopanna and his Romanian partner, F Mergea beat Polish-Mexican pair of M Fyrstenberg and S Gonzalez in straight-sets 6-3, 7(7)-6(4). They will next meet Canadian-French pair of Daniel Nestor and Edouard Roger-Vasselin.
The top seeded Women’s Doubles pair of Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza had little difficulty in overcoming the challenge posted by T Bacsinszky and C Chuang as the current world number one pair floored them with a 6-1, 6-1 score line.
In the Men’s Singles category, P Kohlschreiber surrendered to the former world number one Roger Federer. Fedex won his match comfortably, beating the German 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 to move to the next round where he will meet John Isner of USA.
Andy Murray beat T Bellucci 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 to set up a fourth round date South African Kevin Anderson.
The fifth seeded, Stan Wawrinka beat his opponent R Bemelmans in straight-sets 6-3, 7(7)-6(5), 6-4 and will play Donald Young in the round of 16.
In the Women’s Doubles category, Simona Halep’s domination continued as she inched a step closer towards winning the coveted Grand Slam trophy. Halep defeated S Rogers 6-2, 6-3 and will next face Sabine Lisicki of Germany.
Petra Kvitova had another field day mauling his opponent A Schmiedlova 6-2, 6-1 to set up a match against Johanna Konta in the next round.
