Thomas Cup: India lose opener to Malaysia 4-1

New Delhi, May 18 (IBNS): India's campaign in the Thomas Cup stared on a disappointing note as the hosts were defeated 4-1 by Malaysia by at the Siri Fort Sports Complex here on Sunday.

Losing two singles and doubles encounters, India's only bright spot was  RMV Gurusaidutt as he managed to snatch a win.

In the first singles. India's Kidambi Srikanth was defeated by Lee Chong Wei by 19-21, 12-21.

B. Sumeet Reddy and Manu Attri were defeated by the visiting team of Boon Heong Tan and Thien How Hoon as Malaysia took a 2-0 lead against the hosts.

With Indian needing one win to bounce back in the battle, country's skipper Parupalli Kashyap disappointed his fans by losing his singles encounter to Wei Feng Chong by 13-21, 6-21. Malaysia scripted victory with the win by taking 3-0 lead.

In the second doubles. Akshay Dewalkar and Pranaav Chopra of India were defeated by Malaysia's V. Shem Goh and Wee Kiong Tan by 17-21 21-14 14-21.

Malaysian continued their dominance over India and took a 4-0 lead.

While, it was looking that Malaysia would finish the white-wash, India's Gurusaidutt won the third singles by beating Daren Liew 18-21 21-13 21-19.
