Brisbane , Feb 25 (IBNS): In another nail-biting encounter which went down the wire, Ireland registered their second direct win in the World Cup as they beat the UAE by two wickets here on Wednesday.

Chasing the UAE's 278 for nine, Ireland reached 279 runs by losing eight wickets.

Gary Wilson (80) and Kevin O'Brian (50) put up a  strong show as they added 72 runs in the sixth wicket partnership to reach the winning target.

Wilson had earlier added 74 runs in the fifth wicket partnership with Andy Balbirnie (30).

At the end it was the Irish tail-enders who reached the target and helped the side register another memorable victory after shocking West Indies in their fist match of the tournament.

Amjad Javed took three wickets for the UAE.

Earlier, riding on Shaiman Anwar's sensational 106 runs the UAE posted 278 runs for the loss of nine wickets.

He hit 10 boundaries and a six in his knock and helped recover the side from 131 for six.

When it seemed that the UAE will not even cross 150 runs mark, Anwar and Amjad Javed (42) added 107 runs in the seventh wicket partnership to post a competitive total on the scorecard.

Irish bowler Paul Stirling took two wickets by giving away 27 runs in his 10 overs.
