India at Tokyo Paralympics: Pramod & Manish win gold, Adhana bags silver; bronze for Manoj
Tokyo/UNI: Four Indian para-athletes - shuttlers Pramod Bhagat (gold), Manoj Sarkar (bronze) and shooters Manish Narwal (gold) and Singhraj Adhana (silver) - produced exceptional performance and won medals for the country at the Tokyo Paralympics, here on Saturday.
Four more medals on Saturday took India's medal tally to 17 - 3 gold, 7 silver and 5 bronze at the ongoing Tokyo Paralympics.
Pramod Bhagat clinched a historic badminton gold medal in men's singles SL3 class after beating Great Britain's Daniel Bethell in the thrilling final.
With badminton marking its Paralympic debut in Tokyo, Bhagat also became the first-ever Paralympic champion in his category.
World No 1 Pramod showed great composure and defeated Bethell 21-14,21-17 to win the final that lasted 45 minutes at the Yoyogi National Stadium in Tokyo.
The 33-year-old Indian is also in contention for a bronze medal in mixed doubles SL3-SU5 class, where he and his partner Palak Kohli will face Japanese pair of Daisuke Fujihara and Akiko Sugino in the playoff on Sunday.
Meanwhile, another Indian shuttler Manoj Sarkar won the bronze medal after beating Japan's Daisuke Fujihara 22-20,21-13 in the play-off match.
Earlier in the day, shooters Manish Narwal and Singhraj Adana clinched gold and silver medals respectively for India in the men's P4 mixed 50m pistol SH1 event.
The 19-year-old Narwal scored 218.2 in the final, a Paralympic record, to claim the gold medal.
On the other hand, Adana, who had won the bronze in the P1 men's 10m air pistol SH1 event on Tuesday, added a silver to his kitty after he scored 216.7 in the final on Saturday.
Russian Olympic Committee's Sergey Malyshev got the bronze with a score of 196.8.
Both Indian shooters also had a good show in the qualification round to reach the final. Adana progressed to the final in fourth place with a total of 536 while Narwal shot 533 to qualify at seventh.
Another Indian shooter, Akash failed to book the final berth as he finished 27th in the qualifying round.
