Ex-Australian spinner kidnapped, released in Sydney, four arrested

Melbourne: Former Australian spinner Stuart MacGill was allegedly abducted and then released in a suspected kidnapping attempt in Sydney last month, media reports said.

Four people have been arrested in connection with the incident which took place on 14 April, reports BBC.

Robbery and Serious Crime Squad detectives have charged four men following an investigation into the alleged kidnapping of another man from Sydney’s Lower North Shore last month, NSW Police said in a statement.

" Following extensive inquiries, strike force detectives, with assistance from Raptor Squad and the Public Order and Riot Squad, arrested four men from 6am today (Wednesday 5 May 2021)," read the statement.

A short time later, officers executed search warrants at homes at Sutherland, Caringbah, Brighton Le-Sands, Banksia and Marrickville, and a crime scene warrant at a property in Bringelly.

During the searches, police seized mobile phones and a vehicle. All items will undergo further examination.

A 27-year-old man was arrested at Caringbah, while a 29-year-old man was arrested at Sutherland.

The men were taken to Sutherland Police Station and both charged with participate criminal group contribute criminal activity and take/detain in company with intent to get advantage occasion actual bodily harm.

A 46-year-old man was arrested at Brighton Le Sands, while a 42-year-old man was arrested at Banksia.

The older man was charged with take/detain in company with intent to get advantage occasion actual bodily harm, participate criminal group contribute criminal activity and supply prohibited drug (large commercial quantity).

The younger man was charged with knowingly direct activities of criminal group and take/detain in company with intent to get advantage occasion actual bodily harm.

All four men were refused bail to appear at Sutherland Local Court today (Wednesday 5 May 2021).

Investigations by the Robbery and Serious Crime Squad are continuing.

50-year-old MacGill had played for the national side from 1998 to 2008.

He formed a successful spinning pair with Australian legend Shane Warne.

MacGill is yet to provide public comment on the incident, reports BBC.
