Cricket world congratulate Kumar, Mahela

Sydney, Mar 18 (IBNS) The cricket world joined in applauding iconic Sri Lankan cricketers Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, who played the last ODI match of their glorious career here against South Africa on Wednesday even as their side suffered defeat in the World Cup quater-final match and bowed out of the tournament.

Both had earlier said that the World Cup would be their last ODI tournament.

Sangakkara scored a slow 45 runs off 96 balls in his final innings while Jayawardene contributed only four runs in their last match as they faced South Africa in the quarterfinal match. The African side defeated Sri Lanka by nine wickets and 192 balls to spare.

Indian iconic batsman Sachin Tendulkar tweeted: "Well done on glorious ODI careers @KumarSanga2 & @MahelaJay Being an integral part of the ODI side for so many years,it is difficult to imagine the side without the 2 of you.Wishing you the very best and will miss the 2 of you constructing the innings in coloured clothes."

Former South African captain Greame Smith said :"Congrats to @MahelaJay and @KumarSanga2 on incredible careers and what brilliant memories they gave us all."

Ex-Sri Lankan coach Dav Whatmore tweeted: "To @KumarSanga2 & @MahelaJay bad luck tonight but well done on your superb careers. Good luck and hope to see you both in the future!"

Former Indian cricketer VS Laxman posted: "Congrats @MahelaJay & @KumarSanga2 on an excellent career.You have been gr8 role models & inspiration 2 a lot of youngsters.Good luck:)"

Former Indian skipper Anil Kumble said: "Congrats to @MahelaJay and @KumarSanga2 for a wonderful one day careers. SL will find it difficult to fill the gap...too big a shoes."

Former South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis, who has played against these two players in his career, tweeted: "Congrats to these 2 legends of the game. Was always a pleasure playing against and watching you. Enjoy retirement."

Australian all-rounder Shane Watson said: "Sad to see two of the greats @MahelaJay @KumarSanga2 leave the one day game... #Quality #Class #Humility."

Ex- Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrathposted: "Well played @OfficialCSA on a dominate win over @OfficialSLC Sad to see the legends @KumarSanga2 & @MahelaJay finish their one day careers."
