Protest continues in Mizoram NIT after Bihar student dies

Aizawl, Apr 4 (IBNS): Students continue their protest at National Institute of Technology (NIT) campus in Mizoram over the alleged death of a student after consuming 'unhygienic food and water' provided in the hostel.

Devsharan Kumar, a student of 1st year of B.Tech in the NIT Mizoram, died on Mar 31 at Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH).

Devsharan Kumar, hailing from a poor Dalit family of Khagaria district in Bihar, had allegedly fallen ill after consuming unhygienic quality food and water served in the institution’s hostel, students said.

Students of the institution alleged that Devsharan Kumar initially complained of a throat infection and his condition deteriorated later.

The students said the administration of the institute did not take any initiative.

Kumar was allowed to go on leave but was immediately admitted at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) on his way back home on Mar 30.

The GMCM doctors immediately admitted him to the ICU unit and he was said to suffer a heart infection.

Students of the institution alleged that the condition of food and water supply facility in the hostel is poor and they said that the institution’s authorities were informed about it six months ago but the authorities did not take any measures to change the situation.

Students also alleged that about 15 days before the death, Devsharan appealed the warden of the institution's hostel for leave as he was not able to appear in his mid-semester examination as he was feeling extremely unwell.

The warden ignored it, students said.

The students also alleged that they were not permitted to meet Mizoram Governor to submit their demands.

Meanwhile, Mizo students organisation Mizo Zirlai Pawl has lodged an FIR to Zonuam police outpost, demanding a probe into the student death incident.
