Lucknow/UNI: Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav was on Monday detained along with hundreds of his supporters when he was on his way to join the farmers' protest in the state capital.

Yadav, along with his supporters, sat on a dharna at the Rajbhawan crossing after he was not allowed to go to Kannauj for joining the Kisan march in support of the agitating farmers.

Police also resorted to lathicharge to disperse the SP workers, who were raising anti-government and pro- farmers slogans.

Several SP workers were injured in the police lathicharge.

After an hour-long drama, Yadav was arrested by the police along with his supporters and taken to the eco garden.

Earlier, Lucknow authorities did not allow Akhilesh Yadav to come out of his house on Vikramaditya Marg but later he was allowed to come out to meet the party workers.

Meanwhile, Yadav, also an MP from Azamgarh, has written a letter to Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla alleging how his democratic rights were violated by the UP police by not allowing him to go to Kannauj.

He has sought action against the officials concerned.
