Former Tripura and Meghalaya Governor Tathagata Roy decides come back to active politics

| @indiablooms | Aug 23, 2020, at 09:01 pm

Kolkata/UNI: Former Governor of Tripura and Meghalaya Tathagata Roy has said he would return to active BJP politics in West Bengal, which is going to Assembly election next year.

The 74-year-old seasoned politician had been the president of BJP's Bengal unit between 2002-to 2006, when the party had about five per cent vote bank.

But the situation for the saffron brigade changed for better in West Bengal since Prime Minister Narendra Modi became the face of the party and the BJP won 18 seats in 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

BJP's gain meant a loss for Mamata Banejree-led ruling Trinamool Congress, which was reduced to 22 from 33 seats out of total 42.

Last year's election also saw a whitewash for the CPI(M), which blanked 0 from 2 and Congress was happy to win only 2 from 4 in 2014.

"Spoke to Dilip Ghosh, (BJP state president), Kailash Vijayvargiya, Subrata Chatterjee & Shiv Prakash today," Roy informed on his Twitter account on August 22.

"Told them of arriving tomorrow (Sunday) at 4 pm, will be seeing them in 3/4 days to rejoin BJP. They all welcomed me but warned me of the Covid situation in Kolkata and asked me to take care. I am grateful, " Roy elaborated on his return to home state after holding five years of gubernatorial office in Tripura and Meghalaya since 2015.

Roy is expected to land Dum Dum airport this evening.

In his latest post, Mr Roy said, "Crossed Jorabat, about to leave the state of Meghalaya, possibly for good."

"End of a very fruitful association of 2 years with a state and a city with which my childhood is tied up inextricably. Just got a call from Shri Conrad Sangma, the CM. Khublei, Meitila, God bless Meghalaya," he added.

Though he was away in Meghalaya, Roy has been watching Bengal and was aware of the latest situation, including vandalism in the campus of Visva Bharati University at Santiniketan in Bolpur, Birbum.

"The Bengali brand of vandalism, perfected and taught by Leftists, is known as ‘Bhangchur’ and is a part of the political idiom of West Bengal today. Here it is in evidence in Tagore’s Santiniketan, but with a difference: the local Trinamool MLA has used demolition equipment,"  Roy tweeted on August 18.
