Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee: Hospital says gradual withdrawal of ventilatory support planned

Kolkata/IBNS: The medical board of ailing former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, who is now admitted in Woodlands Hospital in Kolkata with respiratory problems, said he would remain on mechanical ventilation for today while the process of gradual withdrawal of ventilatory support is being planned.

The 76-year-old communist leader was admitted yesterday (Dec 9) in the critical care department under Dr Koushik Chakraborty, Consultant Pulmonologist and Dr Soutik Panda, Consultant Critical Care.

The CPI-M leader was admitted for treatment of acute exacerbation of his respiratory problems. 

The ex-Chief Minister tested negative for COVID-19. 

The Medical Board met the representatives of family at 10 am today and informed:

1. Patient will remain on mechanical ventilation for today and the process of gradual withdrawal of Ventilatory support is being planned.

2. Sedation was stopped in the morning as a trial and patients' sensorium was assessed and found to have improved. However sedation will continue to assist effective ventilation.

3. Preliminary investigation including blood parameters and Imaging didn't show any significant abnormality.

4. Current  Carbon dioxide and Oxygen levels in blood have improved.

5. His Pulse, Blood Pressure and Oxygen Saturation is currently stable.

6. His cardiac condition is stable currently.

7. Adequate nutrition and other support is being taken care of.

8. As he is still on Ventilation Prognosis is guarded and critical.
