UNESCO chief condemns killing of Mexican community radio host

New York, Sept 28 (Just Earth News): The head of the United Nations agency tasked with defending press freedom on Tuesday expressed indignation at the killing of community radio host Agustin Pavia Pavia in the Mexican state of Oaxaca on 13 September.

“I condemn the killing of Agustin Pavia Pavia,” declared Irina Bokova, the Director-General of UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

“Targeting journalists for their work is an intolerable attack on society as a whole. It is important the authorities investigate this crime and bring its perpetrators to trial,” she added.

Agustin Pavia Pavia was shot in his hometown of Huajuapan de Léon, where he hosted “Tu Un Ñuu Savi,” a political programme on community radio.

The Director-General of UNESCO issues statements on the killing of media workers in line with resolution 29 adopted by UNESCO Member States in 1997, entitled “Condemnation of Violence against Journalists.”
