Singapore: Thousands of mourners gather to bid farewell to Lee

Singapore, Mar 29 (IBNS): Singapore's former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew was remembered by his country men with a heavy heart at his state funeral on Sunday, where the procession through the city's streets drew thousands of mourners despite heavy rain.

The crowds lined an almost 10-mile stretch of central Singapore to bid farewell to the country’s first elected prime minister.

Lee’s body travelled in a gun carriage to the National University of Singapore for the funeral service.

The procession was marked by a 21-gun salute, an air force aerial salute and a naval sailpast.

Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who on Sunday arrived at Singapore to attend the funeral, left his remarks in condolence book at the funeral of Lee Kuan Yew.

"The passing of Lee Kuan Yew, is not the passing of an individual, but indeed, of an era. He was a torchbearer of hope, not just for Singapore, but for all of Asia. Today, the flame is no more, but this was a torch that lit the lamp of hope in many new nations. As long as these lamps flicker, he will continue to inspire, eternally. His personal life was an inspiration for many like me. I bow to this committed Karma Yogi, this great man. On behalf of all Indians, I pay homage to him," wrote he.

Lee, who was 91, died of severe pneumonia on March 23.
