Reykjavik, Apr 5 (IBNS): In a significant development since the Panama Papers leaks surfaced, Iceland Prime Minister Sigmundur Gunnlaugsson resigned on Tuesday.

The leaks, from Panama law firm Mossack Fonseca, showed PM Sigmundur Gunnlaugsson owned an offshore company, Wintris, with his wife, BBC reported.

The Prime Minister has been accused of  concealing millions of dollars worth of family assets.

President Olafur Ragnar Grimsson ha earlier refused Gunnlaugsson's request to dissolve parliament.

"I do not think it is normal that the prime minister alone... should be given the authority to dissolve the parliament without the majority of the parliament being satisfied with that decision," the President was quoted as saying to reporters by BBC.

In one of the worst scandals involving huge number of  rich and famous  across the globe, a  massive leak of 11.5 million tax documents has exposed the secret offshore dealings of aides to Russian president Vladimir Putin, Chinese Premier Xi Jinping, Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and celebrities including Barcelona forward Lionel Messi and actor Jackie Chan, reports said.
