Israeli PM Netanyahu planning to set up new settlement in West Bank, US opposes

Jerusalem, Feb 3 (IBNS): Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu plans to set up new settlement in West Bank for the first time in more than two decades, according to media reports on Friday.

United States, on the other hand, has warned that building new Israeli settlements or expanding existing ones may not be helpful in securing Middle East peace, media reported.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's announcement came less than 24 hours after Israel announced the advancement and/or authorization of 3,000 homes in other settlements, reported The Jerusalem Post.

According to media reports, US President Donald Trump has urged PM Netanyahu on Thursday to halt construction of settlements on occupied land.

"While we don't believe the existence of settlements is an impediment to peace, the construction of new settlements or the expansion of existing settlements beyond their current borders may not be helpful in achieving that goal," a White House statement read as quoted by the media.

The last government authorised settlement that came up on the West Bank was in 1991 under the then PM, Yitzhak Shamir.
