Washington DC/IBNS: Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms on Tuesday scripted history by becoming the first Black woman elected governor of a US state after defeating Republican businessman Rick Jackson in Georgia in the midterm elections, media reports said.

Bottoms' victory marks the first Democratic win in Georgia's gubernatorial race since 1998.

Her win comes amid a Democratic surge in the midterms, with the party making significant gains against Republicans in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, dealing a major setback to President Donald Trump.

Who is Keisha Lance Bottoms?

Keisha Lance Bottoms is an American Democratic politician, attorney and former mayor of Atlanta, Georgia.

She served as Atlanta's mayor from 2018 to 2022 before joining former President Joe Biden's administration as a senior adviser and director of the White House Office of Public Engagement.

Her political career has been closely associated with issues concerning civil rights, public safety, healthcare and economic opportunities.

How did she campaign in the midterms?

Bottoms adopted an issues-driven, grassroots-focused campaign strategy during the 2026 US midterm elections, emphasising everyday economic concerns rather than making the historic possibility of becoming America's first Black woman governor the centrepiece of her campaign.

She focused on issues such as the rising cost of living, affordable housing, healthcare access, public education and support for working families.

Rather than relying solely on large campaign rallies and advertising, Bottoms travelled across Georgia, holding town halls, community meetings and grassroots events to engage directly with voters.

She also positioned herself as a critic of President Donald Trump's administration, questioning federal policies and their impact on ordinary Americans.

Her campaign emphasised that voters were more concerned about how a governor could improve their everyday lives than the historical significance of her candidacy.

Why is her victory significant?

Bottoms' election victory carries significance for several reasons.

Historic representation: Her victory makes her the first Black woman elected governor of any US state, marking a milestone for racial and gender representation in American politics.

Democratic breakthrough: Her win in Georgia, a politically competitive state, marks a significant comeback for Democrats in the gubernatorial race after nearly three decades.

Trump-era political climate: Her victory comes amid a broader Democratic surge in the midterms, reflecting growing political challenges for the Republican Party and Trump's administration.

Biden connection: Her association with former President Joe Biden, under whom she served as a senior White House adviser, adds another dimension to her political journey.
