Hamas announces 24-hour Gaza ceasefire with Israel

| | Jul 27, 2014, at 11:02 pm
Gaza City, July 27 (IBNS) Palestinian militant group Hamas on Sunday announced a 24-hour humanitarian ceasefire shortly after Israel resumed its raids on Gaza by land, sea and air following rocket attacks.
"As a preparation for the end of Ramadan and in response to the UN mediation and also regarding our people's living circumstances, we have agreed with all Palestinian factions to give a 24-hour humanitarian ceasefire starting from 14:00 on Sunday," Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri was quoted by BBC in a statement.

The Israeli army earlier in the day said it resumed its raids on Gaza by land, sea and air after Hamas continued firing rockets, ending a unilateral humanitarian truce.

"Due to Hamas' incessant rocket fire during the humanitarian window, we are renewing our aerial, naval and ground activity in Gaza," Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement.

"Due to flagrant violations of humanitarian remission by #hamas, the #IDF is now resuming offensive activities," Israeli army spokesman Peter Lerner wrote on Twitter.

Israel earlier accepted UN's request for a 24-hour ceasefire, but warned it would act if it was breached by Hamas.

More than 1,000 Palestinians and 46 Israelis have been killed, a BBC report said.
