Fire erupts at Dnipro hydroelectric power station after airstrikes in conflict-hit Ukraine

Ukrainian state-owned energy company Ukrhydroenergo said on Friday that the Dnipro hydroelectric power station and a dam located in Ukraine-controlled city of Zaporizhzhia had been hit by Russian strikes, adding that emergency services were working to extinguish the fire that erupted as a result.

"The fire at the plant is currently ongoing. Emergency services and power engineers are working at the site, overcoming the consequences of numerous air strikes," Ukrhydroenergo said in a statement.

There is no threat of the dam bursting, and the situation is under control, the statement read.

Meanwhile, emergency blackouts were introduced in the Dnipropetrovsk region due to the damage at the hydropower station and power transmission and distribution facilities, Ukrainian energy company DTEK said.

"Last night, the enemy launched a massive attack on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. Power generation, transmission and distribution facilities have been damaged. Emergency shutdowns are taking place in the Dnipropetrovsk region by the instruction of the Ukrenergo national energy company," DTEK said in a statement on Telegram.

Energy specialists are doing everything necessary to restore electricity transmission to residential buildings.
