Ravi Shastri becomes Team India's new head coach, Zaheer Khan bowling coach

Mumbai, July 12 (IBNS): Ending the day long drama and mystery, the BCCI has formally appointed former Indian captain Ravi Shastri as the head coach of the national squad, media reports said on Tuesday.

Shastri has been appointed as the coach of the side till 2019 World Cup.

Earlier Shastri was the team director and under him India reached the semi final of the 2015 World Cup and went on to win the 2016 Asia Cup.

Apart from Shastri, former Indian fast bowler Zaheer Khan has been appointed as the bowling coach.

Former Indian captain Rahul Dravid will work as the batting consultant for Indian team in overseas tour.

The coach selection process was involved into a confusion throughout the day as Shastri's name as the head coach was already carried by several media reports. Later, the BCCI came out and denied the appointment of Ravi Shastri for the post.

The mystery and paralell speculation centred around the coach selection, started on Monday, when the CAC, comprising of former cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, decided to hold on for some time to announce the name of the selected panelist.

Ganguly, while interacting with the media on Monday, said: " We want few days more to announce." He even said that CAC would talk to the present Indian captain Virat Kohli before announcing the name.

Shastri has been appointed over former Indian opening batsman Virender Sehwag, who was considered to be a strong contender for the post.

Apart from Shastri and Sehwag, Lalchand Rajput, Richard Pybus and Tom Moody were also interviewed. Phil Simmons could not give the interview on Monday to the CAC.

Shastri is preceded by the former Indian legendary spinner Anil Kumble. Kumble, who was appointed as the coach by the CAC a year back, resigned following a rift with Indian captain Virat Kohli, immediately after the Champions Trophy last month.

India's tour to Sri Lanka will commence from July 26. Both the teams will play three test matches, five ODIs and a T20 game.
