Lionel Messi continued his brilliant form as Argentina defeated Jordan 3-1 to seal their place in the Round of 32 in the FIFA World Cup on Saturday.

The defending champions and tournament favourites completed their Group J campaign with a perfect record, winning all three matches.

Messi, who was rested for the early part of the match with Argentina already assured of qualification, was introduced in the second half and once again made an impact.

The Argentine captain scored in the 80th minute, curling a low free-kick around the wall to extend his side’s lead and put the result beyond doubt.

The goal marked Messi’s sixth of the tournament, taking his overall World Cup tally to 19. He also became the first player to score in seven consecutive World Cup matches.

Giovani Lo Celso opened the scoring for Argentina with a superb free-kick into the top corner, while Lautaro Martínez doubled the lead from the penalty spot.

Jordan, however, put up a spirited fight and reduced the deficit in the 55th minute through Mousa Al Tamari.

Despite the setback, Argentina maintained control and secured a comfortable victory to progress to the knockout stage, where they will face debutants Cape Verde in the Round of 32.
