Keep check on corruption: Sports Ministry to BCCI
New Delhi, Apr 4 (IBNS): The Indian Sports Ministry on Friday said the responsibility to deal with issues like betting and match-fixing during the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) will rest with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
The Ministry also asked the Indian cricket board to furnish details on a number of issues like the mechanism it has put in place to ensure 'unethical practices' do not occur during the cash-rich T20 tournament this year.
The Ministry directed the BCCI to furnish the information on Apr 10.
“I am directed to refer to your letter No. BCCI/HQ/54(A)/1509/2014 dated 20th March, 2014 on the above mentioned subject and to say that this Ministry has no objection from sports angle for conducting the above mentioned event at No Cost to Government subject to clearance from Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Home Affairs. BCCI may approach to the said Ministries directly for obtaining their clearances," the Sports Ministry wrote in a letter to Ratnakar Shetty , Chief Administrative Officer, BCCI.
"As to why a non-regular venue has been selected for holding some matches of IPL-2014 instead of choosing a venue which is on the regular international calendar of the ICC," the Ministry asked the cricket board.
"What mechanisms, BCCI have put in place to ensure that unethical practices like betting and match-fixing, etc. do not take place during IPL-2014?," read the letter.
"Amount of License fees paid to ICC for IPL 2014," the BCCI was asked by the Sports Ministry in its letter.
The Ministry asked the BCCI to contribute to the National Sports Development Fund (NSDF).
The Ministry said: "BCCI is required to contribute towards National Sports Development Fund (NSDF). The amount of contribution to NSDF may please be specified which may be based on either the percentage of profit from IPL 2014 or consolidated lump sum."
The first half of the cash-rick tournament will be played in UAE from Apr 16.
