Lucknow/IBNS: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday banned all public gatherings in his state till June 30 amid the surge in Covid-19 cases across the country, media reports said.

Adityanath took the decision as the country is just a week away from the expiry of the nationwide lockdown which was called by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Mar 24 to stem the spread of the contagion.

The anti-Coronavirus lockdown, which was initially called for 21 days but was later extended, is scheduled to end on May 3.

While 24,506 people have been infected with the pandemic virus in the country, Uttar Pradesh has so far reported 1,621 positive cases including 247 cured and 25 deaths.

Earlier, Adityanath-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government had imposed Section 144, which prohibits an assembly of five or more people, in Gautam Buddh Nagar till Jun 30.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Modi will on Apr 27 meet all Chief Ministers to assess the Covid situation across the nation.
