Washington/IBNS: Two Indian students were killed in a hit-and-run accident in South Nashville, in the US state of Tennessee, on Thursday, police said.

The incident happened on the night of Thanksgiving.

Police identified the two students as Vybhav Gopisetty, 26, and Judy Stanley Pinheiro, 23.

They were students of Tennessee State University.

The police earlier said in a statement: "Officers are working to find David G. Torres, 26, whose GMC pickup truck hit the Sentra. The driver of the GMC ran away from the scene. The description of the driver given by witnesses is similar to that of Torres."

Police was quoted as saying by newschannel9 that Torres' 2011 GMC pickup hit a 2015 Nissan Sentra at 7:35 p.m. as the car was attempting to leave the parking lot of U.S. Bank to Walmart at 4040 Nolensville Pike.

Witnesses told the website the truck was speeding and ran a red light on Nolensville Pike at Harding Place when it hit the passenger side of the Sentra. The car went off the road and went through a fence before slamming into a tree on the Walmart property.

Meanwhile, the university mourned the deaths of the students.

"The Tennessee State University family is mourning the loss of two TSU students killed in an auto accident Thanksgiving night," the university said.

"Judy Stanley, 23, and Vybhav Gopisetty, 26, were both graduate students from India pursuing food science degrees in the College of Agriculture. Stanley was seeking a master’s, and Gopisetty a doctorate," it said.
