Jaishankar’s high-stakes diplomatic tour: EAM to visit UAE this week, first visit amid Middle East conflict

Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will travel to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) this week, marking his first visit to the country since the escalation of conflict in West Asia, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed on Tuesday.

He will also visit Mauritius as part of a two-nation tour.

According to an MEA statement, Jaishankar will visit the Republic of Mauritius on April 9–10, 2026, to attend the 9th Indian Ocean Conference. During the visit, he will meet the country’s leadership and review the full spectrum of bilateral relations.

“He will also deliver the keynote address at the 9th Indian Ocean Conference,” the statement said.

On the sidelines of the event, the minister is expected to hold discussions with counterparts from participating countries.

The visit, the MEA noted, underscores India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy, Vision MAHASAGAR, and its commitment to the Global South.

In the second leg of the visit, Jaishankar will travel to the UAE from April 11 to 12, where he will meet the country’s leadership to review close cooperation and further strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations.

“During the visit, EAM will meet the leadership of the UAE to review close cooperation and deepen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries,” the MEA said.

The visit comes amid heightened tensions in West Asia. The conflict in the region escalated on February 28 following strikes by the United States and Israel targeting Tehran, triggering wider regional retaliation and security concerns across multiple countries, including the UAE.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced a two-week ceasefire involving Iran, stepping back from earlier threats of strikes on critical infrastructure.
