Twitter restores blue tick on Vice President Venkaiah Naidu's personal handle

New Delhi/IBNS: Micro-blogging site Twitter has restored blue tick on India's Vice President Venkaiah Naidu's personal handle, hours after withdrawing it on Saturday.

The blue tick helps people to know the authenticity of a particular account.

Naidu's personal account is followed by 1.3 million followers.

The removal of the blue tick which stirred a row occurred days after the central government had a war of words with the micro-blogging site.

After its offices were raided in India last month, Twitter had expressed its concerns about its "employees" in the country, "freedom of speech" and "intimidation tactics by the police".

In response to Twitter's concern for freedom of speech and expression in India, the Ministry of Electronics and IT said, "The Government of India respects the right of people to ask questions and also criticise on these social media platforms including on Twitter. The Government equally respects the right of privacy.

"However, the only instance of scuttling free speech on Twitter is Twitter itself and its opaque policies, as a result of which people's accounts are suspended and tweets deleted arbitrarily without recourse."

Two Delhi Police teams on Monday evening visited Twitter India's offices after serving notice to the microblogging site in a row over Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sambit Patra's tweet on an alleged "Congress toolkit" being marked as "manipulated media".

According to the police, they went to Twitter India's offices in south Delhi and at Gurgaon to hand the notice to the officials in person after finding the social media giant's replies "ambiguous".
