New Delhi, Aug 20 (IBNS): Congress president Rahul Gandhi along with his mother Sonia Gandhi and sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra paid tribute to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on the latter's birth anniversary on Monday.

Born on Aug 20, 1944, Rajiv Gandhi was the seventh Prime Minister of the country, succeeding his late mother Indira Gandhi.

He was the youngest person to assume the chair of the Prime Minister at the age of 40.

He became the Prime Minister in 1984 with a huge majority of the Congress party but was voted out of power in 1989.

Rajiv Gandhi was the MP from Amethi constituency of Uttar Pradesh between 1981 and 1991.

Rahul, who is the son of Rajiv Gandhi, said in a tweet, "Rajiv Gandhi was a kind, gentle and affectionate man whose untimely death left a deep void in my life.
I remember the times we had together and the many birthdays we were lucky to celebrate with him when he was alive. He is greatly missed, but his memory lives on."

Apart from the Gandhi family, several other Congress leaders including former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh paid floral tributes to his predecessor Rajiv Gandhi.

Rajiv Gandhi became the Congress president in 1985 and continued till 1991, when he was assassinated during an election rally in Tamil Nadu.

In 1991, he was awarded Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian honour.
