Son born after 10 daughters in Haryana, case puts spotlight on India’s son Preference
A 37-year-old woman has given birth to a baby boy after having ten daughters, an incident that once again underscores the deep-rooted preference for male children in large sections of Indian society.
The woman, married to 38-year-old Sanjay Kumar for the past 19 years, delivered her 11th child at Ojas Hospital and Maternity Home in Uchana town of Haryana’s Jind district.
The delivery was classified as high risk, as the mother required three units of blood.
“It was a high-risk delivery, but both the mother and the baby are fine,” said Dr Narveer Sheoran, who supervised the case, speaking to NDTV.
She was admitted to the hospital on January 3 and gave birth the following day. After being discharged, she returned to her village in Faridabad district. According to hospital officials, both the mother and the newborn are in stable condition.
Sanjay Kumar, a daily-wage labourer, told PTC News that the family had hoped for a son.
“We were keen that there should be a son, and even my elder daughters wished to have a brother,” he said.
Despite his limited income, Kumar said he is making efforts to educate all his children.
“Whatever has happened is God’s will, and I am happy,” he added.
Kumar, who got married in 2007, also maintained that he has never discriminated against his daughters.
“Girls today can achieve anything. They have proved themselves in every field and make everyone proud,” he said.
The incident has drawn attention amid ongoing concerns over Haryana’s sex ratio, which continues to remain below the national average, despite showing a marginal improvement to 923 women per 1,000 men in 2025.
