SKM-BJP alliance emerges victorious in the Sikkim by-polls, SDF decimated, Golay wins Poklok Kamrang

Gangtok/IBNS: Sikkim Krantikari Morcha(SKM) founder and Chief Minister PS Golay(Tamang) sealed his victory with a majority of 8,953 votes from the Poklok Kamrang Assembly seat in the by-polls which took place on Oct 21 last.

He defeated Sikkim Democratic Front's(SDF) Moses Rai.

While Golay polled 10,811 votes, Rai managed only 1,858 votes, reflecting the anti-incumbency sentiments were still working against SDF which ruled Sikkim for 25 years.

BJP too made inroads into the Himalayan state with this by-poll winning two seats.

Its candidate Sonam TSH Venchungpa won the Martam Rumtek Assembly seat defeating his nearest rival Nuk Tshering Bhutia of the SDF with a margin of 6,150.

Venchungpa polled 8,204 votes while Bhutia could secure only 2,054 votes.

Hamro Sikkim Party candidate Nima Lepcha received 1,235 votes.

BJP candidate YT Lepcha wins from Gangtok constituency.

BJP and ruling SKM had forged an alliance for the by-polls and according to the seat-sharing agreement, BJP was given the Gangtok and the Martam Rumtek, while SKM had got the Poklok Kamrang.

The by-polls in the three seats had been necessitated after former Sikkim Chief Minister PS Golay, Kunga Nima Lepcha and D.T. Lepcha vacated Poklok Kamrang, Gangtok and Martam Rumtek seats after winning two seats each during the Assembly polls held in April.
