Sidhu likely to continue as Punjab Congress chief, says his aide: Report

Chandigarh/IBNS: As Navjot Sidhu accepted the olive branch extended by Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi two days after he stepped down as the state Congress chief, an aide of the disgruntled leader said he may backtrack on his resignation and lead the party in the next year's assembly elections, according to media reports.

Sidhu "will stay Punjab Congress chief and lead the Congress in next year's election", indicating that the cricketer-turned-politician may review his resignation, reported NDTV.

His adviser Mohammad Mustafa said this morning that the "issue will be resolved soon", the report said.

"The Congress leadership understands Navjot Sidhu and Sidhu is not beyond the Congress leadership. He is not Amarinder Singh, who never cared for the Congress and its leadership," Mustafa said.

Sidhu "acts emotionally at times", he said explaining Sidhu's sudden move, adding that Congress leadership understands it.

According to reports, Sidhu was upset with appointments in the Punjab Cabinet by new Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi and resigned soon after the members of the cabinet were named.

Sidhu, who was appointed the Punjab Congress chief in July, quit on Tuesday saying he could "never compromise on Punjab's future and the agenda for the welfare of Punjab."

"Chief Minister has invited me for talks ... will reciprocate by reaching Punjab Bhawan, Chandigarh at 3:00 PM today, he is welcome for any discussions!" Sidhu tweeted, today.

Chief Minister Channi yesterday dialled Sidhu and indicated that he was ready to reconsider some of the appointments.

"I told Sidhu that the party believes in consultations, please come and we can fix this. If anyone has any objections to any appointment, then I am not rigid on that. There is no ego tussle," Channi told reporters, according to NDTV.
