Science and Technology are tools to combat evils of terrorism, poaching: Assam CM
Speaking at the valedictory function of the State Level Meet on ‘Promoting the use of Space Technology in Governance and Development in Assam’ at Assam Administrative Staff College in the city on Saturday evening, Sonowal said if used on a full throttle Science and Technology can be used as a ‘force multiplier’ to State’s Development. Science and Technology can also contribute to the Government’s promising project of Skill Development.
Stating that without using science and technology no State can progress, Sonowal emphasised that through the use of science and technology all the 56 departments of the State Government can work to their optimum level and can put the state into a growth trajectory.
Stating that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pet programme ‘Digital India’ is an offshoot of Science and Technology, Sonowal said that the whole programme has been aimed at making governance more efficient, accessible and accountable.
He also requested Indian Space Research Organisation, Assam Science and Environment Technology Council (ASTEC) and North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC) to have a coordinated approach to make Science and Technology to shoot out all problems of the State and build a robust network of early warning systems.
Sonowal also asked these organisations to help the State Government’s bid in finding solutions to the problems like recurring flood and erosion, poaching, illegal trades and terrorism through the application of science and technology.
Stating State Government’s proposed plan to dredge river Brahmaputra, Sonowal also urged upon the ISRO to help the State in its endeavour in making the Brahmaputra primarily a central stream river and make it a vibrant source of river transport.
Assam Science and Technology Minister Keshab Mahanta while speaking on the occasion said his Ministry’s bid in using since and technology to stimulate State’s growth.
Senior Scientist of ISRO Dr. J.B. Thomas, Director of ASTEC Dr. Arup Kumar Misra, Director of NESAC Dr. P.L.N. Raju, Additional Chief Secretary Sanjiv Mittal, Commissioner and Secretary Dr. K.K. Dwivedi and a host of other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
