RG Kar scam twist: Court issues non-bailable warrant against whistle-blower Akhtar Ali

Kolkata/IBNS: The Alipore court in Kolkata on Friday issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against Akhtar Ali, the whistle-blower who had flagged alleged financial irregularities at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, media reports said.

The order was passed after Ali failed to appear before the court despite being named by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in its chargesheet in connection with the scam probe.

Ali’s counsel told the court that his client was hospitalised while he had instead moved the Calcutta High Court seeking anticipatory bail.

The court rejected the explanation after the CBI alleged that Ali was deliberately evading his appearance.

In its chargesheet, the CBI alleged that Ali was involved in financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital even before corruption allegations surfaced against former principal Sandip Ghosh.

Ghosh was arrested after his name surfaced in the corruption probe that followed the shocking rape and murder of a junior doctor at the medical college in August 2024.

On Friday, the CBI filed a chargesheet in a special court naming Ghosh and four others in connection with the case.

Meanwhile, civic volunteer Sanjoy Roy, who was arrested by the Kolkata Police shortly after the rape-murder came to light, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a sessions court.

According to the CBI chargesheet, Sanjoy was the sole accused in the crime that triggered nationwide outrage and protests across Kolkata, neighbouring districts and several major Indian cities.

Although Sanjoy was arrested swiftly, junior doctors and protesters had suspected the involvement of more individuals in the crime, which occurred on the intervening night of August 8 and 9, 2024.

Following a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), the Calcutta High Court transferred the investigation to the CBI, expressing dissatisfaction over the handling of the case by the police and the state administration.
