Refrain from 'misusing UNSC': India's advice to Pakistan after UNSC refuses to discuss Kashmir

"Pakistan has a choice of avoiding this global embarrassment time and again by refraining from such acts in the future," the Ministry of External Affairs(MEA) said today.

"An effort was made by Pakistan through a member of UNSC to misuse the platform of the United Nations Security Council. However, an overwhelming majority of the members were of the view that UNSC was not the right forum for such issues and this should be discussed bilaterally between India and Pakistan," MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar told reporters.

China's attempt to garner support in favour of Pakistan on the "current situation in Jammu and Kashmir" went futile after the UK, US, France and Russia stated in a closed-door meeting called by it that UNSC was not the right platform to discuss the issue.

Kumar said the meeting concluded with "an overwhelming support" that the platform should not be misused by Pakistan through a member of United Nations Security Council.

"In our view, it once again highlighted Pakistan's desperate measure to peddle baseless allegations and present and alarming scenario. It lacked any credibility," said the ministry.

Lambasting Pakistan over its continuous attempts to get India censured on international platforms, the MEA spokesperson said, "We sincerely hope that the message has gone out loud and clear to Pakistan that if at all there is any matter between India and Pakistan that needs to be discussed it should be discussed bilaterally."

This is the second time since August that the closed-door UNSC meeting on Jammu and Kashmir ended with similar results.

Replying to questions if the government has spoken to China on the matter, Kumar said it was time for China to take a cue from the outcome of the two closed-door UNSC meets.

"In our view, China should seriously reflect on this global consensus, draw the proper lessons and refrain from taking such actions in the future," the ministry said.

In the press conference, the MEA clarified that the matter has been raised with China at different levels but it was not discussed during President Xi Jinping's Mamallapuram visit in Oct as it was done against a different backdrop.
