Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was detained in Delhi on Wednesday as INDIA bloc members staged a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, media reports said.

According to reports, Rahul Gandhi and his sister, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, were among the opposition leaders detained by Delhi Police during the protest.

Visuals showed security personnel removing Rahul Gandhi and taking him towards a bus.

The protesting opposition leaders were detained as they attempted to proceed towards Jantar Mantar for the demonstration. The INDIA bloc has been demanding the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar and has accused the Election Commission of taking unilateral decisions and allowing irregularities in the voter-list revision process.

Sharing a video of Rahul Gandhi being taken into a bus, the Congress posted on X: “Everything will be remembered.”

Congress plans extended campaign

The Congress has drawn up an extended protest programme to keep the Election Commission and the SIR issue in the political spotlight.

From October 10 to 20, the party plans to hold a “Save Vote, Save Country” campaign at the block level, including bicycle and motorcycle rallies, distribution of leaflets and protests targeting Gyanesh Kumar.

Booth-level public meetings, or chaupals, are planned from October 25 to November 25, with senior Congress leaders expected to participate.

The party has also announced a major rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on November 1.

On November 25 and 26, six separate “Chalo Delhi” marches are scheduled to begin from different areas around the national capital before converging in Delhi on Constitution Day, November 26.

Opposition eyes Parliament, impeachment motion

The Congress is expected to raise the issue in Parliament when the winter session begins after November 26. The party has indicated that it could consider moving an impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The Opposition is also closely watching proceedings in the Supreme Court, where Chief Justice of India Surya Kant is hearing petitions concerning the functioning of the Election Commission and the SIR process.

On October 5, the Supreme Court issued notices to the Centre, the Election Commission and other respondents over allegations that certain SIR-related decisions were taken unilaterally by Gyanesh Kumar. However, the court declined to pass an interim order seeking his suspension, saying it would first examine the responses and relevant records.

The court has indicated that Election Commission decisions could be annulled or reconsidered if they are found to have been taken in violation of the law or the statutory requirements governing the poll panel.

The matter remains under consideration.
