PM Modi tries to silence opponents with fear tactics: Mamata Banerjee

Kolkata, Jan 3 (IBNS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday attacked the Centre over the arrest of party MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay in connection with its ongoing investigation into Rose Valley chit fund scam by the CBI and said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is trying to silence his opponents with fear tactics.

"Modi is dangabaaz [instigator of riots]. He tries to silence his opponents with fear tactics," she told media.

Hitting out at the PM and BJP supremo Amit Shah, Banerjee said: "Why should Narendra Modi and Amit Shah not be arrested?"

Alleging that the chit funds mushroomed during the tenure of the former  Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) government in West Bengal, Banerjee demanded the arrest of CPI-M leader Sujan Chakraborty and BJP MP Babul Supriyo too.

"Chit funds mushroomed under CPI(M). Babul Supriyo and Sujan Chakraborty must be arrested next," Banerjee said.

The Chief Minister said Sudip Bandyopadhyay was arrested 'under pressure' from the PMO.

She announced that her party will launch protests and dharnas against the arrests on Wednesday.

The Criminal Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday afternoon arrested  TMC Lok Sabha MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay in connection with its ongoing investigation into Rose Valley chit fund scam.

After receiving at least three summons from the CBI, Sudip Bandyopadhyay visited the Central probe agency's office at CGO Complex in Kolkata's Salt Lake area in the morning.

After being grilled for nearly four and half hours, CBI arrested the TMC leader.

Meanwhile, TMC Secretary General Partha Chatterjee called the CBI action a vendetta politics of BJP government in Centre.

Earlier on Friday (Dec 30), actor-turned-TMC Lok Sabha MP Tapas Pal was arrested by the CBI in the same case.
