PM Modi discusses GST bill with Sonia, Manmohan over tea
New Delhi, Nov 27 (IBNS): In an attempt to break the deadlock over the Goods and Services Tax (GST) bill, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday met his predecessor Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi for discussions over tea.
Union ministers Arun Jaitley and Venkaiah Naidu also attended the meet.
Emerging out from the meeting, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said, "The PM discussed the GST bill with the Congress which conveyed its three objections over which there were further discussions. The Congress will discuss the government's response to their three objections within the party after which the two sides will further discuss."
Modi had invited Singh and the Congress leader for a discussion to end the standoff on Goods and Services Tax, the government's most cherished tax reform.
This is the first time that the PM had invited the main leaders of the opposition to break the stalemate.
The government is keen on pushing through the bill despite the stiff opposition from the Congress and other opposition parties. Talks between the two sides have so far yielded no results.
The Congress has repeatedly accused the government of failing to bring the opposition on board.
