Mumbai Building Collapse: Shiv Sena leader Sunil Shitap arrested

| | Jul 26, 2017, at 05:25 pm
Mumbai, July 26 (IBNS): Shiv Sena leader Sunil Shitap was arrested on Wednesday morning following an enquiry into the building collapse which occurred a day ago, media reports said.

17 people were killed after a four-storey residential building collapsed in east Mumbai's Ghatkopar on Tuesday.

According to reports, 30 people have been rescued so far.

Shitap was arrested after several residents of the building alleged the leader was carrying out a renovation on the ground floor which actually brought about the collapse.

Reports suggested that police found Shitap was carrying out an illegal renovation in a nursing home owned by him on the ground floor.

The Sena leader has been booked for culpable homicide, not amounting to murder.

Following the collapse of the building, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ordered an inquiry into the whole matter and Shitap's arrest is the latest development to it.

Fadvanis, who visited the place on Tuesday, was quoted by News 18: "Police are investigating the matter and BMC will also investigate and submit its report within 15 days. The government will take stringent action against culprits."
