Modi may attend Parliament for debate on demonetisation, efforts on to break logjam
"If needed, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in a debate on his shock withdrawal of 500-and 1,000-rupee notes, Home Minister Rajnath Singh told the Lok Sabha.
" We are ready for debate...The PM will attend it. He will intervene as well if required, Singh said while defending the demonetisation drive in the face of unrelenting Opposition onslaught.
Meanwhile, according to reports, top ministers have been in touch with Opposition leaders, holding parley to break the logjam that deters Parliament from dispensing with normal business.
At least 10 opposition parties are marking Monday as a day of protest against demonetisation with the Left parties observing 'Bharat Bandh,' a nationwide shutdown.
The opposition said it is the PM who has forced the bandh by refusing to explain his decision in parliament, as demanded repeatedly.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was among top leaders who held a protest at parliament on Monday.
Senior Congress member Mallikarjun Mansur said in the Lok Sabha that the present deadlock can only end when the PM comes for discussion in the House.
The Congress and others say they agree with the intent to combat black money and do not seek a rollback but want urgent measures to stop the hardship of the cash-strapped people, especially in rural India.
