New Delhi, Sept 7 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday greeted the people on Onam.
“Greetings to Malayali friends on Onam. May Onam enhance the spirit of peace, prosperity, brotherhood and truthfulness in our lives,” the Prime Minister said.

Modi also remarked on the significance of Onam as a symbol of national integration, justice, peace and prosperity on the occasion.

“It is wonderful how all sections of Malayali society come together to celebrate Onam, making it a wonderful occasion of national integration. Onam reminds us of the glorious era of King Mahabali and is a day to reaffirm our commitment to create a just, peaceful & prosperous society,” he said.

Onam is a Hindu festival celebrated by the people of Kerala.

It is also the state festival of Kerala with state holidays on 4 days starting from Onam Eve (Uthradom) to the 3rd Onam Day.

The festival falls during the Malayalam month of Chingam (Aug - Sep) and marks the commemoration of Vamana avatara of Vishnu and the subsequent homecoming of the mythical King Mahabali who Malayalees consider as their King.

In Kerala, it is the festival celebrated with most number of cultural elements such as Vallam Kali, Pulikkali, Pookkalam, Onathappan, Thumbi Thullal, Onavillu, Kazhchakkula, Onapottan, Atthachamayam etc. Onam is reminiscent of Kerala's agrarian past, as it is considered to be a harvest festival.
