Mumbai/IBNS: The Maharashtra Police have arrested a Marathi artist in connection with a "defamatory" post on social media against Shiv Sena leader and state cabinet minister Eknath Shinde, media reports said.

Thane's Srinagar Police arrested Mayuresh Kotkar on the basis of an FIR filed by Shiv Sena corporator Yogesh Jankar.

Kotkar was booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code for defamation and other charges.

As per Jankar's complaint, the post had the potential to ignite enmity between the two communities.

He added that the accused had posted the alleged objectionable matter on the Facebook page of the minister on Friday.

Kotkar has now been sent to judicial custody.

Kotkar, a resident of Balkum in Maharashtra's Thane, has acted in several Marathi serials.

Recently, he took part in the Agari community's campaign to name the upcoming Navi Mumbai international airport as DB Patil Airport.
