Maharashtra government announces Rs 34,000 crore farm loan waiver

Mumbai, June 24 (IBNS): Maharashtra government on Saturday announced Rs 34,000 crore farm loan waiver to help around 89 lakhs land holders across the state, media reports said.

Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said his government will waive loans upto Rs. 1.5 lakh per farmer.

During a press interaction, CM said: "We are waiving loans of up to Rs 1.5 lakhs completely. And those farmers who have paid back their loans regularly, will give 25 per cent loan return benefit to them."

The name of the programme which enables the farmers to get the loan waive, is named after Maratha warrior King Shivaji Maharaj.

The decision has been taken by the Maharashtra government after witnessing the widespread protest of the farmers, which took place in different parts of the state.

Just few days back, on June 19, Punjab CM Amarinder Singh  announced crop loan waiver for small and marginal farmers across the state.

In this year, the BJP government of Uttar Pradesh also waived the loans of farmers, immediately after coming to power.
